The Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Boston has adopted a resolution calling for a “clean-cut’ state legislative policy which would permit persons or businesses closed on Saturdays to stay open on Sundays.
According to Rabbi Roland B. Gittelsohn, president of the Council, and Robert E. Segal, executive director, legislative revision being planned now, to amend the Massachusetts Sunday closing law, “fails completely to meet the basic issue of injustice to those who observe Sabbath on a day other than Sunday.”
There is a proposal before the State Legislature to exempt from the Sunday closing provisions shops and stores with from one to three employees. While this proposal is “well intentioned,” the Council resolution declared, it does not meet the need for a “clean cut” revision of the law.
