Brandeis University received a total of $3,417,000 in gifts during the last academic year, president Abram L. Sachar announced at commencement exercises here.
The six-year old university, the first secular university sponsored by Jews in the United States, gave degrees to 159 students in its third graduating class. The university also conferred honorary degrees on Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt; Sen. Herbert H. Lehman; Dr. Selman Waksman, Nobel Prize winner; Dr. Buell G. Gallagher, president of the City College of New York; Dr. Alvin Johns on, president emeritus of the New School for Social Research; and Morris Shapiro, member of the university’s board of trustees.
