S. Ralph Lazrus and Prof. Otto Nathan, who announced their resignation from the board of directors of the projected Brandeis University, during the week-end, today refused to comment on a statement by George Alpert, president of the board, charging them with having planned “to foist on the university a thoroughly unacceptable choice as President” and with attempting “to give the university a radical, political orientation.”
Declaring that the statement contained “untrue allegations,” Mr. Lazrus and Prof. Nathan declined to go into any further detail as to their reasons for severing connection with the projected university, or for Prof. Einstein’s withdrawal of support from the institution’s fund-raising foundation, which bore his name.
Mr. Alpert emphasized in his statement that “the university and the foundation are both soundly established.” The academic plans of the university, he said, are making rapid strides under the direction of Prof. Max R. Grossman, who resigned recently from Boston University to assume the post of provost of Brandeis University. “Our fund-raising activities are flourishing as never before,” he added. Miss Susan Brandeis, daughter of the late Supreme Court Justice for whom the university is named, issued a statement supporting Mr. Alpert.
