Despite the fact that they had conformed with the new decree requiring the foreign language press of Brazil to appear in Portuguese, the Jewish periodicals “Sao Paulo’er Yiddishe Zeitung” and “Yiddishe Presse” have been banned by the National Department for Press and Propaganda, it was announced here today.
Suppression of the newspapers is explained by a regulation forbidding foreigners to have any part in the intellectual leadership of the country. The regulation was found applicable despite the fact that the officially responsible editors of both periodicals are natives of Brazil. All that now remains of the Jewish press in Brazil is the “Cronica Israelita,” a weekly which has been granted temporary permission to appear as official organ of the Jewish religious community of Sao Paulo.
