Austregessilo de Athayde, president of the Brazilian Academy of Literature, called here tonight or further encouragement of the development of Jewish culture in Brazil which, he said, would result in the enrichment of Brazilian culture. Addressing a special gathering of the Academy devoted to Jewish culture, Mr. de Athayde said that a new chapter was beginning in Brazilian-Israel cultural relations.
Avigdor Shoham, Charge d’Affaires of the Israeli Embassy, presented the Academy with three ancient clay pitchers dating back to the second century which were excavated in Israel. Other speakers included the prominent Brazilian writer, Levi Carneiro, and Jose Ashkenazi, president of the Brazilian Jewish Institute of Culture and Information.
