Brazilian Government Prepared to Admit Jews from Poland and Arab Countries

The Brazilian Government indicated that it was prepared to admit Jewish refugees from Poland and the Arab countries. Jose de Magalhaes, Chancellor of the Brazilian Foreign Office, promised in a note to the Brazilian Jewish Confederation that all facilities within the framework of Brazilian immigration legislation would be granted to Jewish immigrants who want to Join their families In Brazil. The official’s note was in reply to a request by the Jewish Confederation last May that Brazil advise the governments of Poland, Egypt, Iraq and Syria that it was prepared to accept Jewish refugees from those countries.

Israel’s Ambassador Shmuel Divon joined representatives of Brazilian Jewish organizations and dignitaries of the community at a banquet here yesterday honoring Moyses Kauffmann, president of the Brazilian Jewish Confederation, on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The assembled Jewish leaders signed a testimonial document that was presented to Mr. Kauffmann, Messages of greetings were received from Jewish leaders in the United States as well as South America. The event was chaired by Benno Milnitzky, chairman of the Sao Paulo Jewish Federation.
