Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress, this week-end presented to Mayor Robert F. Wagner a special message of greeting from Mayor Jose de Rego Maciel of Recife, Brazil, site of the first Jewish settlement in the New World.
Recife, where pioneer immigrants founded a Jewish community in 1634, is considered the “fountainhead” of the Jewish community of the United States. The first 23 Jews who arrived in this country in 1654 came from Recife. In his message, the Recife mayor expressed the “rejoicing of the people” at the current Jewish tercentenary festivities.
