An appeal by the Jewish Confederation of Brazil to the Brazilian Supreme Court to approve the extradition of Nazi war criminal Franz Stangl was read yesterday in Parliament in Brasilia by federal representative Cunha Bueno. The appeal was widely publicized in the Brazilian press.
Stangl, wartime commandant of the Treblinka and Sobibor death camps in occupied Poland, has been under maximum security detention since he was arrested here on March 2 at the request of the Austrian Government. Austria, West Germany and Poland have asked for Stangl’s extradition to face war crimes charges. The Supreme Court must rule by May 2 on the appeals.
