Two persons were killed here and forty wounded when rioting broke out at an anti-forigners’ meeting held under the auspices of the National Evolution Party.

The slogan at the meeting was “Brazil for Brazilians”. The disturbances arose when opponents of the National Evolution Party raised the cry of “Brazil for Everybody”.

The Jewish quarter was thrown into a panic as a result of the accompanying disorders, in the sourse of which a number of Jewish shops were damaged. All shops in the district have been closed to prevent futher trouble. No Jews were among those hurt.

Earlier this month the National Evolution Party held an open-air meeting and parade to protest against the projected importation of 20,000 Assyrians from Irag. Speakers at that meeting said that the party was against the immigration of “uncivilized nomads at a time when immugration difficulties are being created fo rintelligent European people.”

A similar protest also appeared in the Brazilian press at the time. The newspapers demanded that Europeans and, in particular, refugees from Germany, be settled here in preference to the Assyrians, who would not bring with them anything which could be utilized in modernizing and improving the status of the farmers of Brazil.
