Heavy prison sentences ranging from 15 to 30 years in jail for “practicing genocide” were proposed in a new criminal code introduced this weekend in the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. Under the proposed code, persons causing injuries or damage “with a view to commit an act of genocide” would be liable to the second highest penalty, involving a prison sentence of four years to 15 years.
The code also provides sentences of up to a year in jail for persons degrading any other person’s religious feelings, or for interference with the achievement of any religious act. The code had been drafted an presented to Parliament by Brazil’s new Minister of Justice.
