An attempt to desecrate the synagogue of Congregation Bikur Cholim here was made this week for the third time in three weeks. Two homemade incendiary bombs were tossed into the sanctuary, but only slight damage resulted.
City officials and leaders of the Jewish community here were concerned with the recent outbreaks of anti-Semitic manifestations. In addition to the three attacks against the Bikur Cholim edifice, the synagogue of Congregation B’nai Israel here was found recently to have had a swastika painted on one of its walls, and swastikas were painted on the walls of two homes nearby.
Mayor Samuel Tedesco denounced the attacks on the synagogues, declaring them “deplorable crimes which the entire community abhors.” Nathan Skolnick, executive director of the United Jewish Council, announced that the Council will hold a special meeting later this week to determine what immediate and long-range steps may be taken to put a stop to the recent outbreak of anti-Semitic violence here.
