The British Government and the Government of the United States are now engaged in discussions with governments of neutral countries on the question of admitting more Jewish refugees into these countries, it was announced today by the Foreign Office. A declaration signed by several nations encouraging neutrals to give temporary asylum to refugees will be issued shortly, the announcement said.
The statement emphasized that the governments of Britain and of the United States are meeting the cost involved in receiving refugees in neutral lands. The relief measures which have been taken by these two governments so far also include “practical schemes for physical relief to refugees in occupied territories, as well as assisting particular groups to escape from those territories,” the statement said.
Invitations have been issued to twenty more governments to join the Intergovernmental Committee for Refugees to the work of which the American and British governments attach the utmost importance, the statement declared. It revealed that the Intergovernmental Committee will soon have its own representatives in various countries. Details to this effect are now being worked out, the statement emphasized.
“The efforts on the part of the British Government to gain asylum in Palestine for Jews from Rumania and Bulgaria were unsuccessful due to the refusal of the Rumanian and Bulgarian authorities to allow the Jews to leave,” the statement said.
