The British Government is not demanding the extradition of the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem from Egypt, nor his house arrest, it was learned here today. The British Ambassador in Cairo was instructed merely to urge upon the Egyptian Government the importance of insuring that the Mufti take no part in Middle East politics while he is in Egypt.
The opinion of the British Government was conveyed today by British Ambassador Ronald Ian Campbell to Egyptian Premier Ismail Sidky Pasha during a forty-minute interview, a report from Cairo said. Another report said that the Syrian press today published a demand that the ex-Mufti be allowed to return to Palestine.
