Britain to Take No Action on Syria’s Dispatching 10,000 Troops to Palestine Frontier

The Foreign Office intends to take no action in connection with a statement today by Ahmad Sharebat, Syrian Minister of Defense, that ?,000 Syrian soldiers would be sent to the Palestine frontier on “maneuvers” within few days, an official spokesman said this afternoon. He added that the Syrian Government has been informed that as long as Britain remains in Palestine she will be reponsible for the maintenance of law and order.

(The Associated Press, quoting an “authoritative informant,” reports from London that the British intend to withdraw their troops and administration from Palestine March, 1949, at the latest, if the U. N. fails to solve the Palestine problem.)

Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin, speaking today on the occasion of the anniversary of the battle of El Alamein, significantly ommitted all mention of the thousands Jewish troops who participated in the battle nor did he speak of Palestinian industry which helped turn back the threatening Nozi armies in Africa. He paid tribute to ?rab generosity, hospitality and help throughout the campaign” and said that Britain ?t be mindful of this in “this hour of decision.”

Capt. Roy A. Farran, British army officer for whose arrest on charges of kidpping and murder a warrant was issued in Palestine yesterday, today arrived in London to consult with his attorneys.

It was learned that if an application for his extradition were granted by the British authorities, Farran would be arraigned before a British magistrate. (A report on Jerusalem last night stated that the Palestine authorities have made no move as ## to force his extradition.) Farran’s counsels have announced that if an attempt made to extradite him, they will appeal to the highest British courts, including ## House of Lords.
