Britain tried to keep Hitler deputy Rudolph Hess in a British military hospital in Berlin during the 1970s, according to an official document. British officials believed it would not be humanitarian to return the ailing Hess to prison. In the end, Hess was returned to Spandau prison, where he had been incarcerated following the postwar Nuremberg Trials, and where he committed suicide in his cell in 1987.
