The British Government has no indication that Egypt has informed the United Nations she is ready to renounce her state of war with Israel or to muzzle the fedayeen group, Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd told Commons today.
He also informed the House that Egypt had not given the UN an understanding that she would comply with the demand that Israeli shipping be allowed the use of the Suez Canal. The question of Israeli passage through the canal, once the cut is reopened to traffic, is “very present in our minds.”
In reply to a number of questions from Barnett Janner, Labor, the Foreign Secretary, declared that the British Government feels there should be a clear statement on the matter of belligerency and fedayeen raids and that everything Britain was doing in this matter was directed toward avoiding a situation conducive to raids and infiltration. In response to another question, Mr. Lloyd indicated the need for a quick settlement and a solution in which neither side could claim belligerent rights.
