Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs David Rees-Williams announced in Parliament today that arrangements for the speedy repatriation of the 250 Palestinian Jews detained in the Gilgil detention camp in Kenya will be made by the British Government. The announcement was made following the receipt of a message from U.N. Palestine mediator Count Folke Bernadotte declaring that the return of the detainees would not Jeopardize the truce agreement.
The new agreement between Transjordan and Saudi Arabia “will make no substantial difference to Arab fighting power, which failed to make an impression on the new state of Israel in recent clashes,” the London Times said today.
Commenting on Britain’s complete evacuation of Palestine yesterday, the Manchester Guardian today called upon the British Government to give up its one-sided “neutrality,” declaring that it sight “make a difference between peace and war if Britain made it known that the recognition of Israel is a necessary condition to lasting peace.”
