The British Government will not ask the Bonn Government to bar former Nazi Party members or convicted war criminals from positions of authority or control in the projected new German Army, Foreign Under Secretary R.H. Turton declared in Commons today.
He made this statement in reply to a query by Arthur Lewis, Labor M.P., who noted that this was an issue of great interest in Britain. In explaining his statement, Mr. Turton declared that “the selection of officers for the new German Army will be a matter for the Federal Government after the Paris Agreements come into force. The Federal Government have made it clear that their intention is to screen the new officer corps thoroughly,” he concluded.
