Britain’s first Nazi war crimes trial opened in London. Anthony Sawoniuk, 77, was charged with the 1942 murders of four Jews in the German-occupied town of Domachevo in Belarus. In 1991, Britain enacted legislation permitting the prosecution of Nazi war crimes suspects who settled in Britain after World War II.
