Sir Philip Sasson, Under Secretary of State to the Air Ministry, today announced in the House of Commons that the British air fleet will establish a new base at Iraq to facilitate easy communication with Palestine and Transjordania. This is one of a number of moves intended to increase the power of the British military in the Near East.
British air bases are located at Cairo, Egypt; Ramleh, near Jerusalem, and Amman, Transjordania. Frequent manoeuvers over neighboring areas have resulted in considerable lessening of the danger of local insurrection. The Holy Land, at the present time a sore spot in the Near East, is looked upon with much apprehension by British authorities who fear new outbursts of Moslem antipathy against Jewish immigration.
