The Belfair Golf Club of South end was given three months’ notice today by the Town Council to end its blackballing of Jewish applicants or lose its municipal license. The Council of the south coast resort town voted 46 to 11 for the action after discussing a letter from Norman Harris, a Jewish member of the Council, documenting the discrimination charge.
Mr. Harris said that while the clubhouse was municipal property and facilities were heavily subsidized by taxpayers, a “blackball” rule in the club’s constitution denied facilities to a large section of the community on grounds of racial prejudice. He also urged that, in addition to notice of license termination, the Council should also inform the club that no new license would be issued until the discriminatory clauses of the club’s constitution were eliminated.
