The Surrey County Council rejected today a proposal by the Health Ministry that it take over the national government’s share of responsibility for the care of invalid Jewish refugees from Germany and Austria, living in two hostels at Epsom and Richmond. The shelters are conducted by the Jewish Refugees Committee.
For the last ten years, grants of maintenance have been made by the Home Office, supplemented by funds from the refugees committee. The plan would have cost the Surrey taxpayers $22,000 a year.
