British Deputy Prime Minister Clement R. Attlee, addressing a press conference today in behalf of the British delegation to the United Nations Security Conference, which opens tomorrow, said that he did not belive that the Palestine problem would come up at the conference even in connection with the question of international trusteeships for mandated territories.
Queried by the Jewish Telegraphic Agency as to how this international trusteeship idea over mandated territories would affect Palestine, he said that that would have to be worked out at the conference which will establish machinery to deal with the problem. But the British delegation, he States, did not come to San Francisco with any recommendation concerning an international trusteeship over Palestine.
The question of whether Palestine should be put under an international trusteeship should be “put up to the Palestinians,” Mr. Attlee added. He emphasized that the idea of an international trusteeship was designed to raise the standard of living of people in the mandated territories.
Pointing out that the depression which followed the last war was responsible for promoting Nazism and increasing anti-Semitism, Mr. Attlee said that he wanted the San Francisco Conference not only to set up a security organization to prevent wars, but also a prosperity plan through the Economic and Social Council in order to make such phenomena impossible.
