British Diplomats in Arab Countries Summoned to London; Decision on Palestine Expected

A decision on the future of Palestine will be taken by the British Government in the near future it was indicated here today following an official announcement last night by the Foreign Office which revealed that British diplomats in Arab countries have been summoned to London in connection with the situation in the Middle East. Lord Gort, Palestine’s High Commissioner, has been in England for some time.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office, elaborating on the official announcement, said that the question of Arab-Jewish relations will be one of the major items at the discussions which Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin will hold with the diplomats. Another major subject of discussion will be British oil interests in the countries of the Middle and Near East.

At the same time, it was learned here today that Abdul Rahman Azzam Bey, secretary general of the Arab League, will soon arrive in London and will present to the British Government the Arab viewpoint with regard to Palestine. He will be authorized to speak in behalf of all Arab states represented in the League.

The diplomats ordered to London include the ambassadors and ministers from Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Saudi-Arabia, Syria and Lebanon. Simultaneously with the announcement of their expected arrival in England, it was also announced that preliminary work has been started in Iraq on a 580-mile pipeline between Kirkuk to Haifa.
