The new British Ambassador to Israel, John Walter Nicholls, presented his credentials to President Itzhak Ben Zvi today at a ceremony at the President’s residence here.
Ambassador Nicholls, who arrived from Tel Aviv in President Ben Zvi’s car which had been sent for him and his entourage, was greeted at the gates of Jerusalem by the Chief of Protocol of the Foreign Ministry. At the entrance to the President’s residence he was saluted by a guard of honor while a military band played “God Save the Queen.”
The President, flanked by Premier Moshe Sharett and Dr. Walter Eytan, director-general of the Foreign Ministry, received Ambassador Nicholls’ credentials. In a short speech, Mr. Ben Zvi told the British envoy that the problems which had temporarily “obscured our relationship have lifted, opening the view to clearer horizons.”
After the ceremony, the Ambassador, the Premier and the President retired to Mr. Ben Zvi’s study for a private conversation.
Edward B. Lawson, the new American Ambassador to Israel, is scheduled to present his letters of credential to President Ben Zvi at a ceremony here Friday morning.
