British forces today extended their operations, announcing entry into bandit-infested Jaffa and the killing of ten rebels near Jerusalem, while continuing the mopping up of rebels in Jerusalem’s Old City after last week’s occupation. Arab casualties over the week-end totalled 40.
Terrorism had not been entirely suppressed in Jerusalem. An Arab employee of the Government district office and his brother were shot dead near the Eastern gate. The bullet-riddled bodies of three other Arabs were found yesterday. Two Arabs attacked with an axe and critically wounded a Jewish immigrant from Germany.
Curfew was reduced both in the Old City and New City of Jerusalem. The Damascus and Jaffa gates were re-opened for the first time since last Sunday, but passers-by were searched.
One of the stories of heroism which emerged from the events in the Old City was the account of the activities of the Hadassah Medical Organization, whose services in the Old City were restored to normal today. Throughout the past week, Hadassah nurses, notably Miss Chaya Zaslowsky and Miss Chaya Brori, braved gunfire to bring relief to the Jewish quarter and carry on health work. During the hottest fighting they brought water to troops on the battle-line, distributed powdered milk from house to house for infants and tried to alleviate the panic among Jewish residents.
