A British Cabinet official reported today in the House of Commons that there had been 19 cases of arson or malicious damage to synagogues and other Jewish premises in 1966, and nine this year. The figures were given by Dick Tarvene, Joint Parliamentary Under-Secretary for the Home Office, in reply to questions from Laborite Paul Rose. The official also said that the police were paying special attention to the problem.
Quintin Hogg, a Conservative MP, asked whether the Home Office felt there was any connection between the arson attempts and the “renewed dissemination through the mails of anti-Semitic literature.” Mr. Tarvene replied that this was also a matter which would have to be watched.
