JEWISH LEADERS HERE WERE PROFOUNDLY SHOCKED TODAY AT NEWS OF THE SUDDEN DEATH IN NEW YORK OF FELIX M. WARBURG.
DR. CHAIM WEIZMANN, PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD ZIONIST ORGANIZATION AND THE JEWISH AGENCY FOR PALESTINE, WITH WHOM MR. WARBURG WAS IN DISAGREEMENT ON THE ISSUE OF PARTITION OF PALESTINE, SAID IN A STATEMENT TO THE JEWISH TELEGRAPHIC AGENCY:
“IT IS A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY AND AN IRREPARABLE LOSS TO THE JEWS OF THE WORLD, AMERICAN JEWRY, PALESTINE AND ALL OF HIS FRIENDS, AMONG WHOM I COUNT MYSELF. WE CAN ILL SPARE HIM JUST NOW. HIS DEATH IS A GREAT LOSS TO THE WORLD GENERALLY, NOT ONLY TO THE JEWS. WARBURG WAS A GREAT CITIZEN AND A GREAT JEW.” DR. WEIZMANN CABLED CONDOLENCES TO MRS. WARBURG.
Lord SAMUEL SAID: “I HAVE HEARD WITH THE GREATEST SORROW OF FELIX WARBURG’S SUDDEN DEATH. HE WAS A MAN OF SPLENDID, PUBLIC SPIRIT, UNWEARYING IN SERVICE AND ANIMATED BY THE HIGHEST PHILANTHROPY. HIS DEATH IS A LOSS THAT IS IMMEASURABLE.”
NEVILLE LASKI, PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DEPUTIES OF BRITISH JEWS, DECLARED: “THERE IS NO ONE IN THE JEWISH WORLD WHO WILL NOT TONIGHT TENDER RESPECTFULLY, AFFECTIONATELY, SINCERELY TO MRS. WARBURG AND HER CHILDREN, THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY.”
LEONARD G. MONTEFIORE, PRESIDENT OF THE ANGLO-JEWISH ASSOCIATION, PAID TRIBUTE TO HIS GENEROSITY AND SINCERITY BOTH IN JEWISH AND NON-JEWISH CAUSES, SAYING, “HE TOOK THE MIDDLE PATH IN ITS BEST SENSE. HE WAS GENEROUS AND COURTEOUS TO BOTH FRIENDS AND OPPONENTS.”
