A definite campaign to promote the island of Cyprus, a British possession not far from Palestine in the Mediterranean Sea, as a competitor to Palestine for Jewish immigrants has begun in England.
The London Morning Post, leading Conservative paper, today declared editorially that “numerous Jewish immigrants are arriving daily in Cyprus, while Jewish companies are acquiring thousands of acres of land, evidently considering Cyprus more attractive than Palestine for citrus plantations.”
The paper points out that while Cyprus does not hold the same romantic attraction for Jews as Palestine does, the material advantages are, on the whole, greater.
The British administration of Cyprus was urged by The Post to initiate a campaign to attract Jewish settlers to the island.
The island of Cyprus has an area of 3,584 square miles and has a population of 330,000, with three principal cities, Laranaca, Limasol and Nicosia. The inhabitants of Cyprus are in the main Greek.
In recent months Palestine papers have been filled with advertisements of land for sale in Cyprus. Cyprus resorts have also advertised widely in Palestine, proclaiming the beauties of the island as a vacation place.
