AFTER HEARING PROPOSED PARTITION OF PALESTINE DENOUNCED BY MORGAN JONES, MEMBER OF THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT, AND ROBERT SZOLD, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE ZIONIST ORGANIZATION OF AMERICA, HADASSAH CONCLUDED ITS TWENTY-THIRD ANNUAL CONVENTION TODAY.
MR. JONES, WHOSE SPEECH LAST NIGHT WAS BROADCAST OVER A NATION-WIDE NETWORK OF THE NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMPANY, DECLARED THAT PALESTINE WAS TOO SMALL TO BE CHOPPED UP INTO BITS, AND ADDED THAT THE SAME CONDITIONS WHICH WERE SAID TO MAKE THE MANDATE UNWORKABLE WOULD BE REPRODUCED IN THE ARAB AND JEWISH STATES.
HE BLAMED BRITISH FAILURE IN PALESTINE ON “THE HALF-HEARTED ATTITUDE TO THE BALFOUR DECLARATION AND TO EXECUTION OF THE MANDATE.” DEMANDING “ABSOLUTE REGARD TO PLEDGES MADE TO THE JEWISH PEOPLE,”HE SAID ARABS AND JEWS COULD WORK TOGETHER IF LAW AND ORDER WERE RESTORED AND THE MISCHIEF-MAKERS CURBED.
THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT AT LAST SEEMS TO BE SHOWING A FIRM FRONT TO ARAB AGITATION, HE SAID, AND IF THIS WERE MAINTAINED, “THE FUTURE OF PALESTINE WOULD BE A BRIGHT AND PROSPEROUS ONE.”
MR. SZOLD CALLED THE PARTITION PLAN “GEOGRAPHICALLY ARBITRARY, ECONOMICALLY UNFEASIBLE AND POLITICALLY FUTILE.” HE EXPRESSED THE BELIEF THAT DURING THE PROCESS OF EXPLORATION GREAT BRITAIN WOULD SEE THE FUTILITY OF THE SCHEME.
MR. SZOLD DEFENDED THE MINORITY VIEWPOINT IN A SYMPOSIUM ENTITLED, ” THE CONGRESS CONSIDERS PARTITION.” THE MAJORITY PROPOSAL WAS UPHELD BY RABBI DAVID DE SOLA POOL OF NEW YORK.
RABBI JOACHIM PRINZ DECLARED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON THAT THE NAZI GOVERNMENT WAS IN TO STAY, THAT THERE WAS NO FUTURE FOR THE JEWS IN GERMANY AND THE ONLY SALVATION OF EUROPEAN JEWRY LAY IN REBUILDING THEIR NATIONAL LIFE IN PALESTINE.
“THERE IS NO FUTURE FOR THE JEWS IN GERMANY,”RABBI PRINZ SAID.” THEY ARE CONDEMNED TO EXTINCTION. THE LAST CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE HISTORY OF GERMAN JEWRY IS NOW BEING WRITTEN, AND IT IS NECESSARY TO RECOGNIZE THIS FACT AND TO MAKE NO ATTEMPT TO PRESERVE ANY ILLUSIONS ABOUT THE MATTER.”
OTHER SPEAKERS YESTERDAY WERE PROF. OSCAR I. JANOWSKY OF THE COLLEGE OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, PROF. SALO W. BARON OF COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY, PROF. SHALOM SPIEGEL OF COLUMBIA, AND DR. WALTER J. FISCHEL OF THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY.
