The British authorities in Cyprus today pro?lgated a decree providing for the deportation of illegal immigrants arriving in ?prus “by the same ship on which they arrive, though the destination of such ship is not necessarily the place from which they came or to which they consent to be sent.”

The decree is apparently aimed at preventing shiploads of Palestine-bound Jews ?tting in directly at Cyprus and then demanding that they be deported to Palestine. The problem arose recently when Samuel Rosenzweig, a visaless Jew, arrived in Cyprus and then refused to disclose his origin and insisted that he be deported to Cyprus. Under the immigration law, the authorities were compelled to send him to Haifa.

Another report from Cyprus says that a typhoid epidemic has broken out in one of the camps, but is under control.

A joint meeting of organizations of Cypriot shopkeepers, trade unionists and ?mers has cabled U.N. Secretary Trygve Lie demanding that Jews detained on the island be liberated and allowed to proceed to their homes “in Palestine. Without any feelings of anti-Semitism, we declare that Cypriots cannot tolerate the injustice of the ?less confinement of the Jews in the immigrant camps,” the cable added.

The Palestine (Jewish) Communist Party is reported to have contacted leaders the Arab League for National Liberation, its Arab counterpart, with the aim of ?hing an understanding on current problems. A joint announcement opposing parti? may be issued next week, a report said. The League announced today that it has ?ded to challenge the U.N.’s right to decide Palestine’s future status and constitution, declaring that this was a right reserved to the two peopIes. The announcement ?nded termination of the Mandate and withdrawal of British troops, and opposed ?tition.

Talks concerning the establishment of a provisional Jewish government to take ? when the British withdraw, and embracing all shades of opinion within the Yishuv, ? understood to be proceeding, but in secret. No Jewish leader will say anything, ? it is felt that such an announcement now would be premature. In fact, David Gurion went even farther yesterday, declaring that “there is presently no need such a body.”
