Zionist circles here today expressed disappointment over the fact that the English press, with the exception of the Manchester Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, did not carry the speech on the Balfour Declaration broadcast yesterday by Prime Minister Jan Smuts of the Union of South Africa, on the occasion of Balfour day.
The Zionist leaders interpret the English press’ failure to publish the address as an indication that Zionism is “tabu” at the present time and under the present circumstances. Smuts, in his address, declared that “instead of the horror of the twentieth-century ghettos let us carry out the Balfour Declaration’s promise to open the Jewish National Home in Palestine.”
