Israel offers considerable promise as a growing market for new shipping, particularly for the specialized types which British shipyards are well-equipped to build, a five-man mission of the British shipbuilding industry reported here today, on its return from a visit to Israel.

The mission said it had been told that Israel plans to double its citrus exports in the next few years, and would need a larger merchant fleet to handle the increase. Israel’s fishing industry also plans to buy a number of trawlers.

A mission spokesman added: “If we have no contracts to report, we can say that the long-term prospects are good. We impressed on owners and Israel Ministries that the British shipbuilding industry is ready to meet the keenest competition, where it is not subsidized competition.”
