A series of strong resolutions supporting Israel’s immediate and long-term needs was adopted here last night at the conclusion of the 56th annual conference of the British Zionist Federation. The resolutions called on the major powers to ensure the “indispensable conditions” for peace in the Middle East by securing for Israel free and unhampered passage of shipping through the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Akaba; by preventing fedayeen raids; by making certain that Egypt and other Arab states cease their economic blockade of Israel; and by calling on Egypt and the other Arab states to renounce the “right of belligerence” against Israd.
The Conference also called on Britain to consider favorably the construction of oil pipelines across Israel; the “substantial extension” of British commercial relations with Israel; and the “strengthening of the bonds of friendship between Her Majesty’s Government and Israel.” It was the unanimous opinion of the Conference that Middle East difficulties could be resolved best by direct negotiations between Israel and the Arab states.
