“It is impossible to express adequately the Jewish loss in the death of ‘our prince in Israel’,” declared Sir Osmond E. D’Avigdor Goldsmid today at a memorial meeting for the late Baron Edmond de Rothschild arranged by the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
Sir Osmond, who spoke on behalf of the Jewish Agency, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and the Joint Foreign Committee, dwelt particularly on the work of the Baron in Palestine.
“Baron Rothschild’s pioneer work in Palestine enabled the great powers to grant the Mandate for Palestine and to write Jewish history of the last twenty years,” Sir Osmond said, “Looking at Palestine, the Baron could well say, ‘there is my monument’.”
David Ben Gurion, Professor Selig Brodetsky and Berl Locker, members of the World Zionist Executive, emphasized that Rothschild was “the prince of non-Zionists interested in Palestine.”
All the speakers also eulogized Johann Kramenetzky, veteran Zionist leader who died recently in Vienna, as one who merited a permanent place in the history of the Jewish renaissance.
