The president of the Brooklyn Jewish Community Council today demanded more police protection for synagogues and Hebrew schools in the city. Sol A. Liebman wrote to Mayor John V. Lindsay and Police Commissioner Howard Leary that last weekend’s vandalism at the Crown Heights Yeshiva in Brooklyn indicated the need for “more aggressive measures” to avoid the repetition of such incidents.
The building was entered while it was closed for the Sukkot holiday by vandals who smashed windows, emptied filing cabinets and damaged 25 classrooms. The yeshiva is located about three Mocks away from the local police station. Mr. Liebman claimed in his letter that “acts of vandalism directed against synagogues in this city have not abated.”
