Nationalists yesterday boycotted elections for the Council of the Bucharest Bar Association as the Government surrounded the Palace of Justice with strong detachments of police and gendarmes to prevent a recurrence of last year’s election anti-Jewish rioting.
Democratic groups said the Nationalists had abstained from voting
because they realized the impossibility of defeating the democratic, pro-Jewish list in a protected election. The balloting was postponed indefinitely.
Meanwhile, a conference of the National Jewish Party of Rumania demanded that the Government take measures to protect the rights of the Jews and called upon the Jewish population to unite against anti-Semitism.
A resolution adopted at the conference expressed anxiety over the situation of the Jews in Rumania because of tendencies to oust Jews from trade, commerce and the professions.
Protesting against “the hate propaganda of anti-Semitic parties,” the Jewish delegates expressed determination to defend Jewish rights and resist attempts to introduce legislation discriminating between sections of the population.
