The repeal of the numerus clausus law limiting the general number of students to be admitted to the colleges and universities, particularly affecting the Jewish students. was asked in a unanimous resolution adopted yesterday by the Budapest city council.
The motion was introduced by the Jewish councillor, Pakats. It demanded that the numerus clausus law be repealed and that universal freedom of study be restored at least in the colleges and schools of the nation’s capital.
Only a small group of councillors belonging to the anti-Semitic Christian Socialists left the city hall before the vote was taken.
In parliamentary circles the belief was expressed that Count Klebelsberg will now be compelled to abolish the numerus clausus at least in the Budapest colleges as the government party headed by Budapest Mayor Rikpa has turned against the Bethlen numerus clausus policy and voted for the motion.
