The suggestions by Deputy Isaac Gruenbaum, Jewish member of the Polish parliament, that the government subsidy to the Yiddish and Hebrew schools be increased to a million zlotys and that the subvention for Jewish religious needs also be raised to a million zlotys were rejected today by the Sejm’s budget commission by a vote of 15 to 10. The Polish Socialists voted with the minority groups on condition that only moderate demands would be made. Other suggestions from other minority groups were also rejected.
During the debate on the budget for the ministry of trade, the Jewish deputy Rosamarin declared that the “government believed that by suppressing trade they entirely suppressed the Jews. The government ruined trade and turned thousands of Jews into beggars by its slogan of ‘bringing consumer nearer to producer.’ But will Polish industry benefit when there is no one left to market its products? One after the other the concessions have been withdrawn from the Jews. The new trade syndicates discriminate against the Jews in the credit policy as well as in taxes, thanks to which the most difficult economic situation exists.”
