Bulgaria’s Chief Rabbi Asher Hananel, who has been in prison at Sofia since early this year, when he was convicted of alleged “illegal trading, ” has been released from jail, it was learned here today. Rabbi Hananel telephoned his daughter here to inform her of his release. The venerable rabbi said he had been freed on the eve of Shavuot, but added that he was ill. Rabbi Hananel’s prison sentence was for a term of three-and-a-half years.
