A special delegation representing the Bulgarian Jewish communities was today received by Premier Andre ja Toscheff. The delegation demanded that the national status of the Jewish minority in Bulgaria be preserved and that the minorities electoral principle be abided by.
The Jewish Communities sent the delegation to the Premier as the result of a proposal made here two weeks ago for a new law to deprive the national minorities in Bulgaria of their national status. The new law would consider the Jewish minority merely as a religious body, and would deprive the Jews of autonomy in their internal community life. The law would also empower the Government to intervene in the financial affairs of the Jewish community and in the operation of its schools.
The Premier admitted that the Jewish demand was justified and promised the delegation the support of the Government, saying “My government is very favorable to the Jews, after all, we are all members of one big family.”
The delegation also expressed its apprehension about the legalization here last week of two anti-Semitic organizations, Rodna Zashchita and the National Legion, while other political organizations are still banned in Bulgaria.
The Premier assured the delegation that the government would not permit any new anti-Semitic activities, as these would be harmful to Bulgarian interests, he said.
