The Jewish saloon-keepers in Vilna have been deprived of their licenses and replaced by Christians. Is the Lithuanian government preparing to establish prohibition by trying it on the Jews?

Jews who adopt other religions never do it out of inner conviction, as witness Hans Herzl and Gilbert Kahn. Yet the missionaries are constantly busy looking for converts among the Jews. We wonder if they are trying to help us weed out the unworthy so that, after all, we may become a Chosen People, chosen not only for suffering.

A Jewish editor remarks facetiously that he is displeased with Dr. Feitelowitz’s discovery of black Jews in Abyssinia because now the anti-Semites will say that we Jews originate from Negroes. Well, we have been accused of much worse things. And didn’t General Garvy declare, at a recent congress of Negroes, that Jesus was colored?

The other day Mortimer L. Schiff aroused everybody’s curiosity by donating $25,000 to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. We venture to conjecture that this was a result of the activities of the Klan. At any rate his deed shows that the Jews are not clannish.

It is obvious that the Mandates Commission which reported to the League of Nations on Palestine is very solicitous about the Arabs. Poor Arabs! England does not seem so solicitous about them-and their brethren in Egypt-as the Mandates Commission is.

The Mandates Commission, contrary to all proven facts, also thinks that the Jews who come to Palestine from the countries of Eastern Europe are not the proper kind to make farmers. Too bad! Were not the members of the Commission gazing too closely at their own delicate, well-manicured hands when they wrote this report?

Grand Duke Cyril, self-proclaimed Czar of Russia, who is in Paris now, has been refused a passport by our immigration authorities to enter the United States. This is surprising, for our immigration authorities have always been only too happy to welcome Russian monarchists. Cyril must have said something which sounded like Bolshevist propaganda to the officials at Ellis Island.

Anyhow we feel deep sympathy for Cyril. With out American dollars Russian Czarism cannot be revived and Cyril’s star goes down. Another great man relegated to the limbo of obscurity. Sic transit gloria mundi.

Fom the sluggish manner in which returns to The Ort Reconstruction Fund Campaign are coming in, it would seem that the American Jews refuse to respond to the appeal to help their brothers and sisters in Eastern Europe unless something tragically sensational occurs, like the wholesale slaughtering of Jews in the Ukraine a few years ago, or the actual dying by starvation of hundreds of thousands of Jews.

As a matter of fact, hundreds of thousands of Jews in Russia are starving. But they are not doing it fast enough to suit our American sense of speed. Perhaps we should send one of our efficiency experts over to put some "pep" into that starving business. Then maybe the American Jew will wake up to the need of digging their hands into their pockets in response to the Ort appeal.
