Dr. Eugen Gerstenmaier, president of the Bundestag, lower house of West Germany’s Parliament, expressed opposition here today to the decision taken by the Prime Ministers of the 13 Arab League States, at their meeting in Cairo, who had warned all governments to refrain from establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.
“No country with self respect,” said Dr. Gerstenmaier, “could let itself be dictated to by foreign countries as to what it should do.” The Arab Premiers had threatened that they would extend recognition to Communist East Germany if the Bonn Government should establish diplomatic relations with Israel.
