Kosher butchers of this city have asked that the board of commissioners place them under regulations, along the lines of cleaners and dyers, and especially regarding closing hours.
Through their counsel Mr. Ephraim Schwartz, the butchers have declared that the kosher meat business has been until recently, a “racket,” that every man was trying to outdo the other. “The ‘cut throat’ methods, however, are things of the past, and the butchers are anxious to pull together, obtain standard hours, so that they and their help will benefit,” said Schwartz.
Samuel Goldman, a poultryman, member of the State code authority which is drawing up regulations for the trade, declared himself in favor of the proposed ordinance. The code will not affect kosher butchers, Goldman said.
The city commissioners have taken no action on the request. “They can regulate themselves, can’t they?” said Commissioner Henry C. Whitehead. “If we keep this up the city will be plastered with ordinances.”
