President Truman today appointed Henry A. Byroade, former director of the Bureau of German Affairs, to be Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern affairs. The area with which Mr. Byroade will be concerned includes the State of Israel.
Mr. Byroade succeeds George C. McGhee, who has been made Ambassador to Turkey. The new Assistant Secretary served during World War II as a Brigadier General and is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He participated in conversations with Israel Ambassador Abba Eban on the topic of German reparations to Israel.
