The Israel Government has approved a three-year plan to liquidate the maabaroth (immigrant camps) in which some 18, 000 families are still housed, it was learned today.
The first stage of the plan, which will involve an expenditure of nine million pounds ($5, 000, 000) is scheduled for completion before the end of the current financial year. The Ministerial Economic Committee blue prints call for completion of 2, 000 housing units by next March 31.
The new housing units will be allocated to families on the basis of “first in, first out,” with priority going to those families which have lived the longest in the temporary housing of the immigrant camps. Some families were said to have resided in the camps as long as six years.
