The California District Court has ruled that the town of Piedmont, Calif., may not forbid the erection of parochial schools in residential areas.

The case involved a suit by a Roman Catholic group which sought to build a parochial school but was denied a permit by Piedmont officials. The American Jewish Congress filed a “friend of the court” brief arguing that the Constitution guaranteed parents the right to send their children to parochial schools rather than public schools, if their religious convictions so dictate.
