A dashing young man who gave his name as “Mr. David Philip Rothschild Sassoon” and claimed to be the son of Sir Edward Sassoon, a well-known English Jew who married a Rothschild is being sought here by the police, after a number of checks he had given were returned marked “no funds”.
Sassoon, if that is his name, made a great stir in Savannah society circles with his stories of how he won the Victoria Cross in the war and of his friendship with August Belmont whom he said he expected to visit him in Savannah in a few days. He recently entertained at a large theatre party a group of Savannah’s elite society folk.
Inquiries at the British Consulate following his departure failed to verify “Sassoon” as a recipient of the Victoria Cross. It is said that before leaving he succeeded in borrowing substancial sums from prominent people here.
