A demand that German Jewish organizations begin immediately an active campaign among the German people to counteract the growing influence of the “Hakenkreuz” and other anti-Semitic parties in the country, is made in an article by Willibald Roth of Berlin in the Vienna Jewish paper, “Die Wahrheit.” He says:
“United now we have been calling upon the policeman and the prosecutor to stop the shameful deeds of the true-German’ rascals and cowards. Why? Did it ever bring us any relief? Why doesn’t Jewry as a whole adopt the means of enlightenment among the German populace? Tell our fellow-citizens what we are, how we live and what we want! We wish to work and to be left in peace by those who calumniate our people.
“Jewry must see to it that Christian ministers and teachers be made to regard it as their duty to teach the truth, and only the truth. Adult Christians must also be shown by means of educational pamphlets that are to be distributed on masse, the real character of Jewry.
“At the recent elections in Berlin and other places, the Hakenkreuzler showed a tremendous growth, a growth not only in numbers but also in sentiment. It is a sad mark of the moral degradation of a cultured people about whom one will soon have to say that they have become a barbarous people.
“We shall, however hope and wait! But what must be done immediately in order to stem the tide of ever-growing vituperation from the Hakenkreuz is to set up against it another tide-a stream of truth and enlightenment.”
