Combined Campaign for American Reform Judaism moved today into the second half of its 1956-57 nationwide drive with the opening of a special effort for the raising by May 1 of an additional $1,000,000 in cash to help its beneficiary institutions meet a rising need for religious guidance, trained rabbis and skilled teachers. The Campaign raises funds for the activities of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
A.B. Polinsky of Duluth, Minn., general chairman of Combined Campaign, in announcing the three-month special cash drive, made known at the same time that the current effort has raised $1,100,000 since its inception in mid-September. Heemphasized that raising of the second million dollar sum by May I would put the Campaign within $500,000 of its 1956-57 goal, with two full months remaining before its official close on June 30.
Irving S. Schneider, executive vice-chairman of the Campaign, in a detailed report to leaders of the nationwide drive, said that “continued support at the present rate could make this the biggest year in the history of American Reform Judaism.” He told the Campaign leaders that “thousands of Jewish families numbering tens of thousands of men, women and children have indicated a desire to affiliate with Reform Judaism and need help in establishing congregations, and in securing trained rabbis, cantors and religious school teachers.”
